Literature Text
They say our eyes
are the windows
to our souls.
With my own shutters
closed for years,
I've always seen things
in another light.
And that's okay.
I live a full life--
it's just that, sometimes,
I ache to know
where an iris leads.
But when I hear you sing,
I forget about windows--
something tells me
our voices
are the doors.
Your songs have taken me
in from the cold.
My door is wide open,
and I will be brave.
I will speak love,
I will sing love,
I will be love.

Rain-boy
Rain-boy the summer sun has dried you up, leaving puddles as
piles of salt, rivers as dry rocks, barren weeds and broken glass.
Rain-boy, the summer breeze is stiff, it sits in my room heavy,
curling in the corner with constant heaving sighs and i cannot
ignore him. you were always soft, a gentle tapping at my window,
a light humming on the roof when the night fell and you fell and i
fell asleep. i loved falling asleep in your arms, dreaming of kaleidoscope
stained-glass ponds, your grey eyes, your grey skies, you you you.
you were autumn and winter and spring, a gentle metronome, a
constant in my memories, leaning on the windowframe with a

i saw you today, for the first time in months.
i admit, it took me a few seconds to remember
all the words to the song you played on repeat in
your car, the one you couldn’t sing with open eyes.
the music used to come so easily to me,
but when i saw you today, i could only remember
the chorus, and it stuttered its way through my head
over and over again. for the life of me, i don’t know
what comes next.
i have spent years picking up the pieces of you
that you left behind, years spent memorizing
the echo of your heartbeat and the rhythm of
your breaths. your favorite color is purple.

Written July 14, 2014: A random thought that crossed my mind while I was listening to Pentatonix and thinking too much, as usual, about a myriad of things, mainly involving people I love more than life itself. I've found this group's music to be very uplifting because I can hear in their voices that they really love each other and have a blast when they sing together.
Edit (11-19-16): On the eve of FINALLY getting to see Pentatonix in concert, I was able to finish what I started with this piece.
